Brent Z brought this up again in his column today

Quote:
In other news – and I mean “other” news from this morning’s press conference – A&M freshman quarterback Johnny Manziel was asked about his massive hands. He offered up he also wears size 15 shoes – quite the extremities for the 6-foot, 200-pound Heisman Trophy winner from Kerrville Tivy.

Oklahoma linebacker Tom Wort of New Braunfels said his high school coaches told him to make sure and shake Manziel’s hand, just to grasp its enormity.

I know there is much more to his ability than hand size, but I can't help but think it makes a huge difference in being able to manipulate the ball. I also questioned how rarely he fumbled given how he carries the ball from time to time.

Quote:
Former A&M quarterbacks coach Tom Rossley spent 11 years in the NFL. His view on Manziel as an NFL quarterback:

"He has huge hands and I can't tell you how important that is in the NFL. He has a quick release and is a lot more accurate than given credit for. I don't see his size being a hindrance. He is bigger than Russell Wilson [rookie starter for Seattle Seahawks] and bigger than [New Orleans quarterback] Drew Brees. I think he can be better."

I'm wondering how big of an advantage hand size is at QB. Anything like Lance Armstrong's over-sized heart?

There was one NFL QB who must have set a record for fumbles and it was blamed on small hands. I think it was Steve DeBerg, but I could be wrong. Kansas City comes to mind.

... Lance' oversized heart may well be a by product of that which helped him win the TdF ... and then get banned from competition and lose all of his titles ... I wouldn't use Lance as a marker for anything other than a cancer survivor, which in and of itself has great merit.

I should have added to the Armstrong statement, or maybe used Secretariat. Lance had been identified as having a genetic advantage well before his sordid drug story.

Quote:

Is there something in the 33-year-old Texan's genetic makeup that makes him superhuman? Not if you ask Ed Coyle, director of the Human Performance Laboratory at the University of Texas at Austin.

Coyle has been testing Armstrong, who will retire from cycling after this Tour de France, for 13 years. The result is a rare comprehensive study of an athlete over his entire career. Coyle's findings were reported in a recent issue of the Journal of Applied Physiology.

Armstrong clearly has some great genetic advantages.

His oversized heart can beat over 200 times a minute and thus pump an extraordinarily large volume of blood and oxygen to his legs. His VO2 max—the maximum amount of oxygen his lungs can take in, an important measurement for an endurance athlete—is extremely high.

Of course large hands are a physical advantage for a QB.

My own hands are small and that always kept me from gripping a FB firmly enough to throw passes well.

Neither could I palm a basketball, so dunking wouldn't have been possible with my height and hops.

And my short finger span is surely the single factor that kept me from being a great bassist or being able to easily reach more than an octave with one hand as a pianist.

Smile

However, I daily benefit as a practicing dentist from being able to very comfortly and gently fit my fingers into a patient's mouth.

[Bringing it back to pg ~~ JAB]
Instead, I've always depended on my dexterity.

Cool

BTHO OU!!!!!!!

I was wondering if anyone else had noticed his large hands. JFF hands remind me of Chuck Berry's.

It is amazing I can stand upright without having to balance myself against something given that I only have a shoe size of 9.5 (10 in golf shoes). If I were a size 15 there is no telling what athletic feets I could accomplish.

Fast Fred,- a dentist with small hands and fingers are one of the top criteria in my choice in a dentist. The physical limitations for one profession are the benefits of another.

I tell my kids - when searching for a dentist make sure that they don't have fat fingers. Wink

See! I told ya!

But context matters, the other hand in the picture is that of Svetlana Pankratova!
