Pretty brutal final thanks to the Dutch physical tactics and the subsequent Spanish diving.

I hope FIFA punishes this thug even though the ref didn't want to red card him 20 minutes into the game.

TNAg76,

I'm an old American football guy; shoot, I grew up in the Odessa Permian system in the early 70s just as MOJO was beginning to cement its fame. So, football is definitely in my blood. BUT... my soon-to-be sophomore son plays soccer for his HS team, and he plays it quite well. And it has been an absolute joy to watch him progress over the past 10 years in his talent and skill for the game.

So, my thought here is that watching soccer - like eating many new foods and drinks - is something of an acquired taste. We may not have been weened on it, but we can learn to really enjoy after we've given it a fair try.

Here's a great article from SI.com on the subject. This guy really resonates with me, I suppose for anything because his early avoidance of the game then his yearning to watch the subtlties of it all later on. As his Polish father told him, "Watch the touch."

Now, I find the flopping to be disgusting, and there is no place for it at all. Shame on you But then again we have pro athletes in NBA who are absolute masters of the sad practice. That kind of crap cheapens the game. Any game. Point being, it is not a unique phenomenon to the game of soccer.

Yet, the "touch"... ah yes, the touch. It is a thing to behold. Applause Gig 'em I never thought I could latch onto a game that has a final score of 1-0 and find it exciting. Yet, I have now acquired the taste. Wink

Oh, and another thing: South Africa did an outstanding job of hosting this World Cup! Applause Gig 'em

Trying to persuade someone to enjoy watching a sport/competition they don't like watching (i.e. soccer, baseball, golf, tennis, bowling, football, basketball, ... well you get the idea) is like trying to convince a 60 year old to like broccoli even though they never have.

It just isn't going to work very often.

We all have our personalities, likes, dislikes and idiosyncrasies -- there is no right or wrong and, in most cases, no changing them.

Trying to do so is generally just a waste of time and frustrating.

I say, live and let live -- if they are destined to be drawn to the sport someday, it will happen for some reason or another without anyone trying to persuade them.
