So, what's a decent 40 yard dash time for an 8th grader?

Two fastests guys on my son's 8th grade team are him and the 15 year old Einstein from our neighboorhood. They are also the two starting DEs on the A team.

Their 40 times were both 4.95. Is that decent, or is his team just painfully slow?

I think that is a good time for an 8th grader.

that's pretty slow if they are the fastest on the team.

You should at least have some TB/WR/DB types who can run 4.7 range. I don't know how large or diverse your school is though.

Seems ok for DE, but slow for fastest on the team. We had a RB that was around 4.7 maybe a tad faster in 8th Grade.

I think that is pritty fast, I ran in that range in Jr. High and my senior year I ran in the 4.5-4.6 range.

Yeah, I was thinking that sounded decent for a lineman, but pretty slow for the team. Of course, I mostly just care about him... Wink

Lot of growth or non-growth that can happen between 8th and 12th grades. Some of our guys (smaller and slower) developed much later. Some of the studs in 8th (me:) didn't get much bigger or faster comparatively.

I always tell young kids (relatives, family friends) to keep working becuase you never know what will happen 1, 2, or 3 years down the road.

If things come too easy too early, you can tend to take things for granted and lack the necessary discipline to succeed later when things get difficult.

You guys are crazy, a 4 anything is pretty quick for a Junior high kid.
I ran a 4.7 as a sophmore in HS and a 4.5 as a senior and i was one of the fast kids.

We had a handful of athletes who could all clock sub 4.7 in 8th grade. One of them even had a low 11 second 100m.

I don't think a 4.95 for an 8th grader is bad, but I've never coached that level - the youngest was incoming freshman, so it was almost 8th graders. Laughing

I'm trying to remember what our fastest freshmen were, and I don't think any of them cracked 4.7.

From my experience it is nearly impossible to compare these hand times. They are notoriously unreliable and typically too "fast."

A 4.95 is quite fast for a Jr High kid, no matter the position but especially DE. School size is irrelevant, that's fast for an 8th grader.

I don't recall my Jr high 40 time but as a freshman in HS(9th grade) I ran a 5.2 in the 40. As a Jr in HS I ran a 4.5. We did not test as Sr's in HS because we did not go through S&C after the season.

I ran the sprints in Jr High and High school and usually did pretty good at the track meets in the DFW area. I ran in the upper 10s in the 100M/sprint relay and low 22s in the 200. I do recall running a 55.8 400m in 8th grade and that was with a 40 time slower than a 5.2 I'm sure since that was my 9th grade 40 time.

Even though he is a DE, he is 6'-0" and only about 160#, so it's not like he's a big DE.

The concensus seems to be that this time is good.

I'm pretty excited about this season att all levels - Cowboys look decent, Aggies are coming on, Mansfield Summit (where my oldest is) is primed to kick a$$, and Wester Middle School is looking good.

Ought to be a fun year.

This is a pretty good time for an 8th grader. I've seen kids though who mature much faster than most and are faster and stronger than the other kids. Eventually the other kids grow and that kid falls back because they aren't on top anymore. Make sure that doesn't happen.

I remember 2 kids that ran 52 second 400 meters in 8th grade. And they never got any faster during HS. Of course they were shaving a pretty thick beard in 8th grade too and were basically full grown.
